Terrorism in the present is a little bit different with terrorism in the past because is not so easy to know exactly who the actors of the terror. After WTC and Pentagon bombed in USA, terrorism became international phenomenon in the 21 centuries that needs extra attention from international community. International community tried to make specification of international terrorists who did all this terror, most of them Islamic terrorist groups. Terrorism is a threat for national and international security that causes many victims and can make fear to many people. Here I want to explain particularly how the international community specifies terrorism in Indonesia until the way to counter it.

US officials and terrorism experts worry about al-Qaeda using Indonesia as a base for a Southeast Asian front in its campaign against “infidels,” Jews, and the US. Indonesia resisted international pressure to crack down on local militants suspected of al-Qaeda ties until a devastating October 2002 attack on a Bali nightclub and the simultaneous bombing of a US consular office on the island which killed more than 200 people, most of them foreign tourists. [1]

Singapore and Malaysia claim to have evidence of terrorists being based in Indonesia or of Indonesians leading offshore terrorist groups. Singaporean senior minister Lee Kwan Yew declared that Indonesia was a ‘hotbed of terrorism’. The claims have been used by the Bush administration to pressure Indonesia to take strong action against them. [2] Experts also say other terrorist attacks within Indonesia including a December 2000 church-bombing campaign, the August 2001 bombing of a Jakarta shopping mall by a Malaysian national, the August 2003 bombing outside the Marriot Hotel in Jakarta, and the October 2005 suicide bombings in Bali may also be connected with international terrorism. [3]

Suspected terrorist groups in Indonesia they are: 1. Al-Qaeda fighters received terrorist training in Poso region of Central Sulawesi; 2. Indonesian Muslims played a leading role in the Kumpulan Mujahidin Malaysia (KMM) and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) ‘terrorist groups’ in Malaysia and Singapore respectively, both of which have been linked to al-Qaeda’s network. [4] 3. Laskar Jihad is a violent group aiming to eliminate Christians from the Moluccas and Sulawesi Island and establish an Islamic state. After the October 2002 Bali bombing, Laskar Jihad announced it had disbanded. Its leader, Thalib, says he met Osama bin Laden while fighting in the Islamic brigades opposed to the 1979-89 Soviet occupation of Afghanistan but says he’s rejected al-Qaeda’s offers of funding. [5] 4. An additional the International Crisis Group (ICG)'s own research identifies numerous Indonesian military links to terrorist violence. Certainly, there's no evidence that military personnel planted the Bali bombs, but there's no doubt it planted the seeds that produced those bombers and their successors. Radical Islam may provide the motivation for terrorism, but Indonesia's armed forces repeatedly supplied the opportunity and means. There may be more coincidence than evidence linking Indonesia's military to terrorists. But sticklers for direct links should consider this: approximately 300 deaths attributed to JI operations in Indonesia are a tiny fraction of the civilian death toll at the hands of TNI and its minions since 1999. [6]

From the foreigners’ point of views Indonesia is fertile ground for Islamic terrorist groups because Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country, a vast archipelago with porous maritime borders, a weak central government, separatist movements, corrupt officials, a floundering economy, and a loosely regulated financial system. While Indonesia is known as a secular, tolerant society that practices a moderate form of Islam, radical Islamists gained momentum.

Since October 2002 the Indonesian government has cooperated with US and Australian officials in their attempts to disrupt terrorist networks in Southeast Asia. While several incidents including the bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta in 2004 have hindered Indonesia’s success in combating the country’s terrorist threat, the US says Indonesia is continuing its counter terrorism efforts. According to the State Department’s 2004 Country Reports on Terrorism, Indonesian officials arrested dozens of terrorist suspects including JI leaders, former instructors at JI training camps, financiers of attacks, and members of splinter terrorist networks. Since the bombings, prosecutors and courts have convicted more than 100 members of JI or affiliated groups on terrorism charges. [7]

As conclusion, terrorism in Indonesia is a big threat for our own country and also for the international community. Fighting terrorism in Indonesia must begin with identifying the real threat. Terrorism that has happened in Indonesia is justified that link to international terrorism. But it is still in doubt whether it is true. Although terrorists in Indonesia link or not link to international terrorist groups, the actors must be condemned because they are huge threat to human life. We as member of international community must respect the right to live and freedom from fears by never stop fighting against terrorism.

don't You think that terrorism in Indonesia flourishing because of countrys' pluralism? i mean, Your country combines too many religions and cultures and the only factor that contains the civil war is the army that can raise once. in accordance to all this, which measures can minimize the terrorism as a threat?

and all in all, i think this work is quite good. it wides our outlook, as we never can understand the situation far abroad without help of evidence.
i think, it must be 5.

Yes your opinion can be considered as it is already said in article there some separatist movements in Indonesia. But for my point of view, I think terrorism also flourishing in non pluralism countries. Terrorists can be everywhere. They can be linked each other. Thus terrorism can happen in all over the world. According to the facts pluralism in our country is a threat to separatism who wants to be independent from Indonesia (separatist movements) but it is just one of factors that makes terrorism flourishing. A measure can minimize the terrorism? may be we can read together this source http://www.bettermanagement.com/library/library.aspx?l=14374. Thank you very much for you comment and the «mark 5» :-).

Jetty, the essay is good, really, in a short survey you gave the general idea of the situation with the urgent problem of terrorism in Indonesia. I think it deserves 10, there are no substantial flaws and the contents is well structured and very informative. Good job!
