«The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake triggered a series of lethal tsunamis on December 26, 2004, with fatalities last reported at 82,000, ranging from those in the immediate vicinity of the quake in Indonesia and Thailand to people thousands of kilometres away in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and even as far as Somalia in eastern Africa. The death toll from this event makes it the deadliest tsunami in recorded history». - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsunami

«Like so many others around the world, we at Google are following the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami that has hit many parts of Asia and east Africa. Below are a few sites already set up to provide information and handle donations for victims throughout the region. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected» - http://www.google.com/tsunami_relief.html

Earthquake has essentially changed the map of Indonesia and India. The Cataclysm which has occurred on December, 26 in Asia has carried away the lives of several hundred thousand people. For the evening of Thursday according to the official numbers, more than 125 thousand people died. In some parts of Indonesian province Acheh, according to rescuers, each fourth inhabitant could be lost. And this province is inhabited by 4,3 million people - http://txt.newsru.com/world/30dec2004/maps_changes.html

Sorry for Russian, but the article quoted below is in that language.

http://txt.newsru.com/world/01jan2005/tt.html

I feel really sorry for the tsunami-hit countries, that is great that the international community rallied to help those countries. Nevertheless, i cannot but ask a cynical question - why the same international community did not bother that much about disasters in Africa? For example, the civil war in Rwanda where, according to Human Rights Watch, «In the thirteen weeks at least half a million people perished in the Rwandan genocide, perhaps as many as three quarters of the Tutsi population. At the same time, thousands of Hutu were slain because they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it». Can it be because Indonesia has oil, India has nuclear weapons, Thailand is the favourite resort for the West? Any other reasons?

It would be great if we had as much decency and sympathy as those in the West had, but they'd better be more impartial in their decency and sympathy.

I think that lack of attention to the situation in Africa on the part of the Western countries has several reasons. One of them is undoubtedly political, because genocide is a not an act of nature, but a political crime. And since political crimes are nowadays most often punished by an intervention, one is unwilling to put this burden on one's conscience, one's citizens and budgets. I don't mean this to sound either cynically or as a justification. But I think it does explain certain things.

Yet, I don't think that impartiality is possible in such matters. States have limited resources to spend on humanitarian issues, and it is inevitable that they choose those issues that concern them more so to speak.

Asian countries cry out loud, while African people keep silent. They can't tell the world. And the world isn't interested in them. And it's more dangerous to report from Rwanda...

Tsunami earthquake in Asia happened in the time of Christmas and New Year celebrations and relatively political silence. As a consequence of that it has such a huge coverage in the world's media. For instance, would this disaster able to compete with the beginning of Iraq war? Just because nothing to show anymore and the audience is bored with terrorism news in the Middle East, which have become a part of everyday life for western people. Wars in Africa are not gonna be surprising as well. Its an informational market. There was no any other sensational affairs in the world at that time. The more information in the media - the more attension from the Western communitty.Actually many disasters in the different part of the world are still unfamous due to «lack of PR».

An interesting point of view can be found at:
http://reflectioncafe.blogspot.com/

They actually say that we were so appalled by that tragedy because it demonstrated that the whole population/community can be wiped out; we have more or less put up with our own mortality, but we believe that some society/community/way of life that we belong to is going to continue its existence.
